MANAGED INVESTMENTS

Managed Investments are funds that hold and manage a portfolio of assets on behalf of their investors. Buy and sell decisions are made by an investment professional.

Investors own a proportion of the investment portfolio commensurate with the size of their investment, and are entitled to any profits and distributions (dividends), but also subject to losses should the value of the portfolio decline.

A managed investment may be listed or unlisted. A listed managed investment can be bought or sold on the Australian Stock Exchange via a broker, and may be a trust (whereby the investor holds units), listed investment company (whereby the investor holds shares), or stapled security (where investors own two or more securities which are generally related and bound together through one vehicle.)

Listed Managed Investments fall into one of six broad categories:

  • Listed Investment Companies (LICs)
  • Property Trusts
  • Infrastructure Funds
  • Pooled Development Funds (PDFs)
  • Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs)
  • Absolute Return Funds
